Before You Solve the Problem, Make Sure You Understand It

Organizations often move into action before establishing what is actually producing the problem. A request for stronger accountability or better communication can quickly become a training program or consulting assignment, even when the proposed response may not fit the situation. Sound diagnosis requires patience and enough openness to discover that the first explanation may be incomplete. When leaders act on the wrong reading, the problem remains, and confidence in the people asked to solve it begins to erode. This article considers how leaders can build a more credible understanding of the situation before choosing an intervention.

Your Team May Be Cooperating Without Being Aligned

Teams do not always fail because people refuse to cooperate. Sometimes they fail because cooperation is mistaken for alignment. When clarity is weak and agreement is assumed, the work still moves forward. Resentment often builds among the people carrying more than their share. Your Organization Produces the Behavior It Rewards

In both teaching and consulting, I have watched leaders explain disengagement, resistance, and reluctance to take ownership in familiar terms: motivation, attitude, and commitment. Sometimes that is true. More often, people are responding rationally to the system around them. Every organization has a hidden curriculum. It teaches people what is safe, what is rewarded, what is ignored, and what actually matters. Over time, those lessons become part of the culture, even when they contradict what leaders say they value. This week’s article is about a pattern I see in nearly every organization I work with: your organization produces the behavior it rewards. If you do not like the behavior you are seeing, the place to look first is not the people. It is the system.
