Reflections on Integrity by Design

Celebrating the first anniversary of my book, The People Dividend, has been a meaningful moment for reflection (see my newsletter article from last week). Reflecting on that journey has led me to examine the foundations of my work. This anniversary reminded me of my earlier book, Integrity by Design, and its messages. It’s a book that still resonates with many, and as I reflect on its core principles, I recognize how its relevance remains essential today.

This period of reflection made me realize that the core themes of authentic leadership and organizational health connect all my work. While The People Dividend explores the value of investing in people, Integrity by Design provides the blueprint for how to do that with authenticity and purpose. It all begins with integrity.

The Timeless Power of Authentic Leadership

Integrity by Design was written as a guide for leaders who want to move beyond good intentions and create real, positive change. The book is built on a simple yet powerful idea: to lead others effectively, we must first lead ourselves with integrity. This means aligning who we are with what we do. When our actions match our values, we build trust, foster respect, and create an environment where people can thrive.

The book invites you to explore several key areas:

Congruency: Are you walking the talk? Integrity is about closing the gap between your values and behaviors you exhibit daily.

Accountability: It encourages creating a culture where people take ownership of their actions and their impact on others.

Respect and Empathy: True leadership involves understanding the context of others, appreciating different perspectives, and treating everyone with dignity.

These principles are not just business strategies; they are life principles. They apply to the boardroom, the team meeting, and our personal relationships. The book continues to do well because these challenges are universal. Leaders, coaches, and professionals at all levels seek ways to infuse their work with more of themselves and build organizations that are both successful and deeply human.

Integrity as the Foundation for Meaningful Work

One of the core arguments in Integrity by Design is that personal and organizational well-being are intertwined. A healthy, thriving organization cannot exist without individuals who feel aligned and whole. The book provides practical frameworks and exercises designed to help you and your team have meaningful conversations about what integrity looks like in action.

I share a folktale in the book about a boy and a girl who exchange marbles and sweets. The boy decides to keep his best marble, while the girl gives him all her sweets as promised. That night, she sleeps peacefully, but he lies awake, wondering if she also held back her best sweet. This simple story perfectly illustrates how a lack of integrity erodes trust and creates doubt, affecting our own peace of mind as much as our relationships with others.

This captures the core message of the book. It focuses on building trusting and open relationships with colleagues and customers and emphasizes creating a workplace where people feel safe, valued, and empowered to perform their best.

A Gift That Inspires Growth

As the holiday season approaches, we often look for meaningful and lasting gifts. While a box of chocolates is always nice (!), a gift that inspires growth can change someone’s life. Integrity by Design's continued success suggests that it has served as that kind of gift for many.

This book is for:

🎄 Leaders and Executives who want to build a culture of integrity from the top down.

🎄 HR Professionals and Coaches who are dedicated to developing authentic leaders.

🎄 Anyone seeking to live and work with greater alignment and purpose.

Giving Integrity by Design is an invitation to reflect and act. It’s a tool for personal development and a guide for organizational transformation. It encourages readers to think deeply about their values and provides practical steps for weaving those values into the fabric of their daily lives and leadership processes. The holiday season is a natural time for reflection and setting intentions for the year ahead. This book can serve as a powerful companion on that journey.
