The Great Flattening: The Trend That Could Break Your Org Chart

A dramatic structural shift is quietly happening across corporate America, and the numbers are a clear warning.

Middle managers made up 29% of all layoffs in 2024—a massive jump from the 20% average of the last five years. At the same time, job postings for these roles have plummeted by over 40% since 2022.

From Amazon to Microsoft to Walmart, companies are embracing "The Great Flattening"—eliminating management layers to cut costs and speed up decisions.

While the logic seems sound, this trend creates three dangerous blind spots for leaders:

🔹 The Translation Gap: Middle managers don't just manage; they translate executive strategy into actionable work. Without them, the gap between vision and execution becomes a chasm.

🔹 The Human Connection Void: They are the primary engine for employee well-being and engagement. Removing them rips out the essential human support system that prevents burnout and retains talent.

🔹The Execution Risk: They are the organizational shock absorbers, catching errors and miscommunications. Without them, frontline teams are directly exposed to the chaos, jeopardizing quality and performance.

This is a classic violation of The People Dividend principle: chasing short-term operational efficiency at the direct expense of the human systems that create long-term value.

Flattening your org chart may look good on a spreadsheet, but it risks flattening your culture, your innovation, and your capacity for sustainable performance.

The question for leaders isn't just whether you can afford your middle managers. The question is whether you can afford the hidden costs of removing them.

How is your organization protecting its human "support system" while striving for efficiency?
